HCFI Bi-Weekly Review 12/03/04

Highlands Center for Faculty Initiatives

*      Center sponsored two programs for American Education Week (November 14-20).  The first was a certificate program.  139 students identified 111 different faculty members (from 26 different departments) as “exceptional in the classroom.”  Each faculty member was nominated between one and twelve times.  The second program was a “Thank You” gift distribution to all faculty members, administrators and staff who routinely interact with HCFI.

*      Significant time was spent dealing with budget issues.

*      Packets of information were prepared for Dr. Bartelt and for an upcoming meeting with Dr. Pogue.

*      Planning for the second annual Conference on the Detection and Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse began.

*      Co-Director and Co-Director elect are interviewing students.  There is a CRITICAL need to address the Technology issues of the Center and its website.

CETP-PA

*      ~4000 items (posters, gift certificates, T-shirts, curriculum packets) have been received for the 2005 Evening of Science program.

*      The Dean of Education met with several faculty from his school to discuss their role in CETP-PA initiatives.  A combined meeting with SM&T faculty is being planned.

*      Faculty who require their students to present activities at the Evening of Science Activities met to review guidelines for the 2005 program.

*      Hands-on science kits were received from ASSET, Inc.  To extend the EUP/General McLane SD partnership from the summer LASER conference, teachers in the GM SD will pilot the kits and the constructivist approach to teaching in the spring.

*      Early plans for an Introduction to Inquiry program (for K-8 teachers in local districts) in February were generated.

EVE

*      The Fall 2004 Values Newsletter is finalized and ready for distribution.

FYFE

*      The Resource Buffet program was a resounding success.  Eighteen campus offices were represented by 22 individuals.  32 Participants (including many first year faculty members) attended.

HCFI Departmental Representatives Committee

*      In an attempt to involve all departments, an announcement of paired meetings for the Spring session was made (each representative can attend one or the other).

*      54 faculty members submitted requests totaling more than $25,000 for the “Improvement of Teaching Fund for Faculty and Coaches.”  Applications are under review by the committee and will be ranked before the end of the term.

IIC

*      The Dialogue Across Disciplines program on Deviance is under development for Spring.

Neighborhood Forum

*      Project RAKE was very successful.  280 volunteers representing more than 50 offices and organizations contributed time, planning, money and raking for a total of more than 600 volunteer hours

*      The Committee continues to make progress on the Community Information booklet.

UTL
