HCFI Weekly Review Nov. 21, 03

 

Highlands Center for Faculty Initiatives

 

*   Planning for the Conference on the Detection and Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse continues.  (~170 conference registrations have been received.)  Two meetings held to finalize planning.

*   All-faculty survey re:  Research Colloquium data (N=71) has been collected and is being collated by UPIRCI.

*   Planning for RAKE 2004 has been initiated.

*   HCFI web site modifications continue; current work focuses on the Institute web pages.  Next phase will focus on the addition of photos from events.

*   Center staff working to compile an “HCFI Activity album,” a record of events/office products

*   Made 25 copies of a CD for Dr. Barbara Rahal.

*   The First Year Faculty Experience Committee met and is working to develop a survey to gauge new faculty needs.

*   The HCFI led the on-campus celebration of American Education Week. 

Monday:  Certificates were distributed to faculty who were nominated by students.  48 Certificates were distributed to faculty members who were nominated by nearly 60 students who found their instructors to be ‘exceptional in the classroom.’

Tuesday:  9 Members of the University Administration team volunteered to “Walk About” campus classroom buildings and recognize the faculty teachers.

Wednesday:  100+ Years of Teaching at Edinboro was a luncheon program attended by 40 students, faculty, staff and administrators.   Dick Bevevino (Foreign Languages), Dawn Snodgrass (a past Co-Director of the Center, Professional Studies) and Wally Jewell (ret. Math and Computer Sciences) presented reflections on teaching here.  Comments from participants were overwhelmingly favorable.

Thursday:  A reception was held in the front lobby of McNerney Hall to recognize past leaders of the Center for Excellence in Teaching/the Highlands Center for Faculty Initiatives.   Plaques listing Co-Directors, Institute Chairs and Editors were unveiled.  These plaques will be on permanent display in HCFI.  A total of 26 individuals stopped by the reception; this included the other 7 past/present Co-Directors of the Center.

Friday:  A Thank You note and Bookmark were distributed to all faculty members.

 

CETP-PA:

*   Certificates for CETP-PA instructors of endorsed courses and CETP-PA graduates were finalized.  Printing and distribution will occur prior to the end of the term.

*   Evening of Science Activities faculty planning meeting scheduled.

*   1020 items have already been donated to the EOS 2004 program.

 

EVE:

*   Fall 2003 Values Newsletter is nearly finalized.

*   Hosted the 1st annual Character Education Conference.  Initial feedback indicates that 73 participants found the program to be very well done.  The link to the ‘Empty Bowls’ luncheon was especially well received.  The Community Outreach Center collected ~$500 to be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

*   Conference evaluations are being summarized.

 

IIC:

*   A survey for interested members is under development.

 

UTL:

*   Institute meeting was held.  Evaluations from the Resource Buffet were reviewed.  Conversations bout Universal Design Instruction were discussed.  A Faculty Forum with the Provost is being investigated.
